For Teachers

As a teacher, you are in a unique position to work alongside young people and inspire them to learn, develop, and be better prepared for life beyond school. Today’s classrooms, from preschool through to primary and secondary schools, are becoming increasingly diverse. Students may differ in, for example, cultural backgrounds, socio-cultural backgrounds, linguistic backgrounds, learning needs, and social, emotional and behavioural needs. Identifying ways to address the needs of students with emotional and behavioural difficulties is the focus of Behaviour Zen.

Behaviour Zen recognises that teaching is a demanding enterprise. Teaching students who exhibit emotional and behavioural difficulties can be yet more demanding. When one student begins to present challenging behaviours in a classroom, the climate of the classroom can change dramatically. Often, a considerable amount of time and energy can be spent on the student with the challenging behaviours, which can have a deleterious effect on the quality of the educational experience for all students. Research consistently shows that managing student behaviour is linked to teachers experiencing high levels of stress, burnout, job dissatisfaction and attrition. While there is a wealth of information available aboutbehaviour management, it can be daunting knowing where and how to start.

If any of this sounds familiar, then you have come to the right place. Behaviour Zen provides resources (Behaviour Zen Web Based App, Behaviour Zen YouTube channel videos and Behaviour Zen booklet series)that will guide you on your teaching journey to achieve a classroom that supports students with emotional and behavioural difficulties. These resources are built on the evidence-based approach of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and the collective experience of the many teachers who have walked this road.

By working with the student’s family and professionals (e.g. psychiatrist, psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech pathologist, social worker) who have specialised knowledge and expertise in emotional and behaviour difficulties I believe you can guide your student through this transformative journey. Through your patience, perseverance and persistence, you can make the difference in the school and post-school lives of your students with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
